Squidward Tentacles is SpongeBob’s next door neighbor and reluctant friend. He lives in a house that looks like an Easter Island Moai at 122 Conch Street. Squidward works as a cashier at the Krusty Krab restaurant with SpongeBob although he would much rather be playing his clarinet. SpongeBob and Patrick try very hard to make friends with Squidward, but he always seems to be annoyed with them. Squidward is a mean tempered, whiny, bossy guy who thinks that he is much better than everyone else.

SpongeBob still likes him though and constantly shows him by doing nice things for him, which normally ends up getting him into trouble. Squidward’s rival is Squilliam Fancyson, from his high school band class. The two resemble each other in looks, but Squilliam is much more successful than Squidward and never lets him forget it.

He is living Squidward’s dream, owning a private island, private heliport, lake, boat and a big mansion. Squidward feels that he deserves everything that Squilliam has and is constantly playing his clarinet, although most Bikini Bottom residents don’t like to hear him.

He thinks he can play much better than he actually sounds. Squidward also likes art, painting, sculpture and has no idea that he really has no talent. SpongeBob loves Squidward even though he can be really mean to the little sponge and his other friends. Squidward has tried many things to become the famous person that he wants to be, including wearing a wig, hosting a talent show and forming a band. But alas, he is destined to remain where he is, living between SpongeBob and Patrick and collecting clams at the Krusty Krab.
